María Pagés, a dancer and choreographer from Seville, along with her dance company, brings us a personal reinterpretation of Carmen, the woman. It is not just a revision of the famous character or a version of the frequent adapted play by Meriné. Pagés gives us the voice of a woman that speaks out to us forcefully, clearly and powerfully, to express the reality that faces, constructs and unwraps the feminine soul. “Yo, Carmen” snatches away the prefabricated image we have all incorporated into our cultural universe. Pagés’ production defends life, pleasure, freedom and joy as the fundamental rights of any human being.

María Pagés began her career in the company of Antonio Gades, who she unreservedly considers her great maestro. She received the Fine Arts Gold Merit Medal in 2014, as a dancer and choreographer, the National Dance Prize in 2002, the Léonide Massine in 2004 and the Comunidad de Madrid Culture Prize in 2007. The eight Giraldillo Awards she has won at the Seville Flamenco Art Biennial confirm her status as one of the most important flamenco dancers and choreographers around. María Pagés and her company have been invited to perform on the most prestigious stages around the world.
