GALERNA (Azken bidaia) is an emotional exploration of the sea: the fear of the unknown, the mystery of the depths, impotence in the face of nature’s forces, the poetics of the boundless ocean, the risk of losing family members, the enthusiasm of discovering new worlds, the joy of seafarers, and the joy of drawing the creatures that live there. Beginning with Basque roots (mythology, music, texts, traditions, stories, and dances), an open vision of the world is offered.
Entertainment for the whole family. Performed by children and young people but all audiences are welcome. Poems about the sea, stories about the sea, maritime melodies from the songbook, work songs, love songs… the harvest from the sea is plentiful. Juan Kruz Igerabide has combined all of these elements to create a poetic look at the sea that is profound, uplifting and bittersweet all at the same time.
Because the show is based on Kantika Korala, the choral music will carry the most weight, but an instrumental ensemble, a baritone soloist, and an actor will accompany the live choir.
Leioa Kantika Korala has become a global champion for Basque children’s choral music in just 20 years. Led by its conductor, Basilio Astúlez, they have toured extensively, won contests, been commissioned, premièred, and recorded pieces by Basque composers, etc.
