EL PRÍNCIPE CONSTANTE

by Calderón de la Barca

Great passions and deep convictions surface in one of Calderon de la Barca’s great masterpieces .

06 to 09 may 2021

The National Company of Classical Theatre presents the well-known work by Calderón de la Barca, El príncipe constante directed by Xavier Albertí and with Lluís Homar in the role of the Infante Don Fernando. The freedom of each person, defended to its ultimate consequences, leads Calderón to visit areas of human behaviour not previously visible, blending this defence with a fascinating exaltation of infinite aspects of human love and its projection to what is transcendent. Great, unbridled passions emerge, but also deep convictions and sacrifices.

This is one of Calderón de la Barca’s great masterpieces. A work that has been highly praised by various European theatrical traditions namely German, Polish and Russian. One illustration of such acclaim is the great quote from Goethe who, in a letter to Schiller in 1804, stated that if all the poetry in the world were to disappear, it could be reconstructed on the basis of ‘El principe constante’.
