UN MONSTRUO VIENE A VERME
Are we too old to believe in monsters? A story about facing fear… and life itself.
Conor only has 13 years, but he knows exactly what’s going to happen just after midnight. The same nightmare will come again — that “nightmare full of darkness, wind, and screaming.” It has been that way since his mother fell ill. But this night feels different. Conor hears a voice calling him from the garden. In front of his house, there’s an old church with a cemetery and a yew tree — a tree that transforms into a monster before his eyes. Night after night, guided by this creature, Conor embarks on a journey to escape his fears… until he finds the strength to face his worst nightmare: his own story — the truth.
LaJoven and the Spanish Association Against Cancer join forces in this production as part of the “Todos contra el Cáncer” (Everyone Against Cancer) programme, aiming to build a powerful alliance of cultural, health, educational, business, and institutional partners to help achieve the goal of a 70% cancer survival rate by 2030 and raise awareness about the disease.
Patrick Ness, author of the novel on which this play is based, says stories don’t end with their writers. British writer Siobhan Dowd, diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004, began to write a story about a boy facing his mother’s terminal illness. Siobhan died in 2007. Her publisher later approached Ness to complete the story: “She had the characters and a premise. What she didn’t have, sadly, was time.”
