MARIZA

Mariza, the greatest voice in Portuguese music, celebrates her 20-year career by interpreting in her new album the songs of Amália, coinciding with the fact that in 2020 her fellow countrywoman Amália Rodrigues, the legendary fado singer and actress, would have turned 100 years old. Mariza herself acknowledges that “Amália is present in our lives. She is a great inspiration, not only for me, but for so many Portuguese artists and many other international artists”. Throughout her career Mariza has always admired Amália and this recognition in the form of a full album is her way of paying homage and thanks to Amália’s legacy and inspiration.

Mariza proffers her interpretation of Amália, with arrangements and orchestral conducting by Jaques Morelenbaum, eternal aide of Caetano Veloso and Ryuichi Sakamoto. Mariza Canta Amália is the happy encounter between an inexhaustible repertoire and an immortal voice, a marvellous fusion that we will enjoy at Arriaga Theatre.

Mariza has received prizes and awards from all over the world, such as the title of Master of Mediterranean Music, from Berklee College of Music of the University of North America; and the Luso-Spanish Prize for Art and Culture. In addition, Executive magazine named her one of the most influential women in Portugal.
