The Lutheran chorale is a key element in the Protestant Church, intended to be sung by a congregation, thus making it part of the liturgy. It is also the backbone of hundreds of musical pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach.
The Arriaga Theatre is staging a special concert, offering a selection of Bach’s greatest chorales and choirs from his motets and passions, performed by the Choral Society of Bilbao and Ensemble Diatessaron, specialising in Renaissance and Baroque music. Among them, Jesu, meine Freude (motet BWV 227) illustrates Bach’s deep faith and his hope to join the heavenly choir after death.
