The feast night of Saint John enjoys a justified reputation as being prodigious. Shakespeare set his comedy “Midsummer Night’s dream” on that very night. Set in an imaginary Athens, whilst Duke Theseus counts the hours until his wedding to Hippolyta, we learn about the amorous entanglements of a group of youths who love the ones who despise them and despise the ones who love them. To make matters even more convoluted, Oberon, King of the fairies, and Titiana, the Queen, in their disputes, scatter spells around the woods where they all seek refuge, and where a company of amateur players is preparing a performance. The stage is set for the night to make strange bedfellows of these characters, who all end up yearning to embrace a body other than the one they proclaimed to adore during the day.

Following the success of the theatrical productions commissioned by the Arriaga Theatre in past seasons, “Los enamorados” and “La gaviota”, it is now time for William Shakespeare’s “Midsummer Night’s Dream”, with an extraordinary cast of Basque actors and directed by Pablo Viar, who also gave us the highly acclaimed production of the zarzuela operetta “El caserío” produced by the Arriaga.
