In 1930s Europe, with a civil war raging in Spain, with Hitler in Germany ranting about his annexationist and violent plans, England, following the abdication of Edward VIII, finds itself with a King, the shy and stuttering “Bertie”, his Majesty George VI, who is incapable of addressing his people on the radio without provoking pity or laughter. In a mass society and at a time in which communications are fundamentally important, the man that symbolises an entire nation cannot address it without causing everyone to blush.
This is the battle of a man who must surpass himself, in order to perform at the level that history demands of him. It is also the story of a friendship between this man and the speech therapist with whom he shall spend many hours and share many feelings. And it is a deep reflection on inherited power.
David Seidler, who also wrote the film script, has written a play that contains greater humour and boldness, which Magüi Mira directs with his usual freedom and mastery, with a great cast, and adapted by Emilio Hernández.
