Although nowadays we think of Felix Mendelssohn as the great exponent of German music, he was not the only talented musician in his family, and indeed his sister displayed very similar aptitudes from a very young age.

Fanny became an outstanding pianist and amateur composer, and at first her father thought that she, instead of her brother, should have dedicated her life to music. However, at that time, it was not deemed appropriate for a woman to have a musical career, so Fanny remained an amateur musician. Six of her early songs were published later, with her consent, under Felix’s name.

In this concert we pay tribute to these siblings, and particularly to Fanny as the invisible victim of the reining sexist attitudes of the day.
