This special concert, featuring master pianist Joaquín Achúcarro and the Bilbao Orkestra Sinfonikoa (BOS), will open with the overture of Amilcare Ponchielli’s La Gioconda. It will celebrate the 130th anniversary of the Arriaga Theatre, whose first performance – no other than La Gioconda – took place on 31 May 1890. This is where we come from.

And where are we now? On 31 May 2020. Thousands of artists have come on our stage. Moreover, the Arriaga Theatre is a major cultural venue, triggering all kinds of feelings in the audience when the curtain rises. A theatre that is still standing is quite an achievement. A theatre that produces moving performances is a challenge, something to be proud of. And this season, we have another anniversary in which standing the test of time and arousing emotions come together: the 250th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven. So we thought that we could bring the two anniversaries together and celebrate big style. It could be a good occasion to listen to Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major, Op. 58. Maybe the pianist and the orchestra have a few more surprises for us…
