Vienna, 1902. Alma Schindler, 22, pregnant, marries Gustav Mahler, 41, renowned director of the Vienna State Opera. Alma looked up to Gustav, but she did not like his music (except for a few later compositions, like Das Lied von der Erde or Symphonies No. 6 and 7). She was a composer too. Gustav adored her, but he only agreed to marry her on the condition that she gave up her career as a composer: ‘You’ll live for my music, not yours.’ They stayed married until Gustav’s death in 1911. After his death, Alma destroyed their letters, redacting or rewriting some. So maybe the real love story of Alma and Gustav – key figures of the cultural history of Europe at the turn of the century – can only be read in the music.
The year 2020 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven, one of the greatest composers in the history of music. To celebrate the anniversary, the Arriaga Theatre will focus on the First Viennese School, a name used to refer to the Classical period in Western art music in late-eighteenth century Vienna, and the Second Viennese School, the group of composers revolving around Arnold Schoenberg in early-twentieth-century Vienna. Beginning with Beethoven himself, one of the most prominent musicians of the First Viennese School and a forerunner of the Second, the programme honours the greatest composers of the Viennese School, especially in the field of lieder.
