Monsieur de Pourceaugnac

The comedy-ballet is a type of show that blends dance, music, and theatre.

17 to 18 january 2016

This unique production, promoted by Clément Hervieu-Léger and the musician William Christie, director of “Les Arts Florissantes”, well known in Bilbao, offers audiences the opportunity to enjoy the genre of comedy-ballet today. Hence, this project is designed not as an opera, but as a genuine Theatre-Music production.

The comedy-ballet is a type of show that blends dance, music, and theatre, created by Moliere, the musician Lully and the choreographer Pierre Beauchamp in France in the 17th Century. Today we are offering one of these comedy-ballets, which first opened in Chambord in 1669, and which is rarely performed these days.

Having recently arrived from Limoges, to enter into marriage with Julie, Pourceaugnac falls victim to a band of schemers paid by the young girl’s lover to avoid the arranged marriage. The victim of all manner of machinations, this poor country bumpkin has no option but to flee from Paris disguised as a woman.
