In Greek mythology, Medea is the archetypal witch or sorceress, the primitive and terrible woman, daughter of the King of Colchis, who, in love with Jason, helps him to recover the Golden Fleece, thereby betraying her family. When Jason in turn betrays Medea’s love, she slays their children in order to take her revenge, depriving him of the most precious thing: his descendants. That which is born out of love, dies with it, appears to be her terrible reflection.

The myth of Medea has penetrated the entire western culture. It was covered, among others, by Euripides, Seneca and Apollonios of Rhodes, in Ancient times, and by Corneille in seventeenth century France. Unamuno translated the work of Seneca, which was performed in Mérida; Passolini took it to the cinema with María Callas.

Vicente Molina-Foix, based on the classics, offers us a text which José Carlos Plaza directs, Ana Belén and Adolfo Fernández act out and the Mérida Festival produces. A guaranteed success.
