LA BARRACA
A story that connects us with real life, the one we perceive and understand through our senses.
*La barraca* tells the story of the rejection faced by the family of Batiste Borrull when they settle in a shack and on land in the Valencian orchard that was previously worked by several generations of another family called Barret. The local gardeners, all tenants, intend to keep the land barren as a symbol of power over their landlords. The conflict will intensify until it becomes a tragedy.
*La barraca* is a timeless story that speaks of the eternal struggle between reason and violence, of a community sickened by wild behaviour. It is a story that speaks to us of the identity we derive from our connection to the land where we are born. It is a story that links identity and self-esteem; it connects us to real life, the one we perceive and understand through our senses.
Vicente Blasco Ibáñez’s novel is striking for the relevance of its characters and conflicts. *La barraca* addresses issues such as the unjustified rise in rents, evictions, child harassment, and the bitter conflict between natives and immigrants.
