Joaquín Achúcarro

Following his magnificent performance of the Polonaise in A flat major, op.53 (Heroic) which brought the Arriaga Theatre’s 125th Anniversary commemorative show to a spectacular close, the great pianist Joaquín Achúcarro, from Bilbao, is returning to our stage.

The 2014-15 season, in the incredibly long and successful career of Joaquín Achúcarro, is taking him around the world, performing in countries such as USA, Spain, France, Italy, Argentina, Taiwan, Japan, Great Britain, Switzerland, Portugal and China. In addition to his extraordinary success at the Verbier Festival in Switzerland, playing alongside other pianists such as Argerich, Kissin and Sokolov, and Trifonov (with whom he will once again perform in August 2016), and his recitals in Tokyo, Buenos Aires, Geneva, Dallas, Shanghai, Beijing, Tianjin, etc., he has also performed as a soloist with the Royal Philharmonic, the Orchestre National de Lille, the Taipei Symphony, the Nashville Symphony and the Monterrey Symphony in the USA, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Bilbao, the Sinfónica de Euskadi, the Orquesta RTVE, etc. Additionally, the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon put on a “Joaquín Achúcarro Season” in his honour, at which he performed four different concerts over nine days with the Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa.

In addition to delivering his fellowship at the Southern Methodist University in Dallas, he has also taught master classes in Shanghai and Geneva.

Last October, the prestigious Codalario magazine presented him with its 2014 Special Prize in Madrid, and on 25 January in Bilbao he received the Sabino Arana Prize.
