GULA / GOLA

Created by Oriol Pla and Pau Matas

He dances because he no longer remembers who he is. No one remembers.

14 january 2027

He never stops, never stops. He wants to savour everything. And he skims superficially over things. “Don’t be selfish. What a disgrace. Cover your mouth, your teeth are showing.” He made himself smaller and smaller… and now he is an expert at pleasing everyone. Taking advantage of the benefits, of course. A skilful harlequin. Look at him, leaping from one place to another, thus avoiding stopping for a moment and observing everything around him. He is happy in fantasy. He dances because he no longer remembers who he is. No one remembers. Now he only strives to be looked at. He can do no more. He never stops, never stops. Managing to be seen, even if only by offering a pitiful image, frees him from the torturing tyranny of insignificance.

Gluttony corrupts us. To eat out of gluttony is to savour without digesting. In a broader sense, it means taking from the world only its exciting and pleasurable aspects. We avoid contact with the feeling of emptiness by filling our mouths with pleasures and stimuli. Oriol Pla and Pau Matas’ new creation arrives at Teatro Arriaga, a piece for which Oriol Pla has been recognised with the 2025 Teatre Barcelona Award for Best Performance. Only a few months ago he left us open-mouthed with *Travy*, and now *Gula / Gola* undoubtedly promises to do the same.
