Joseph Maurice Ravel (Ziburu, Lapurdi, 7 March 1875-Paris, 28 December 1937) was a key composer of the twentieth century. Beyond his famous Bolero, his music is usually associated with impressionism, but it also has neoclassical and even expressionist characteristics. Ravel revolutionised piano and orchestra music. A master of orchestration and a meticulous craftsman, he pursued formal perfection in pieces that are also deeply, movingly human.
