Winterreise (Winter Journey) is a 24-song cycle for voice and piano by Franz Schubert (1797-1828), based on poems by Wilhelm Müller (1794-1827). The songs were composed by a sick, impoverished Schubert who was living on charity. This version, directed by Joan Anton Rechi, goes back to the original register and vocal range, that is, tenor.
Winterreise is a melancholy composition, giving a tragic view of existence. Its themes – unrequited love, sadness, despair, but also courage and hope – are set in a bleak atmosphere. Here, this powerful emotional setting is translated into a graveyard with icy tombs and will-o’-wisps, visually and emotionally helping the audience undertake their musical journey.
