Wajdi Mouawad

Feelings, cultural heritage, love and hate... a family story in the midst of conflict.

19 to 20 december 2025

Eitan is a young German man born into a religious Jewish family. His father, David, was born in Israel and emigrated when he was seven years old with his father, Etgar, and his mother, Léah. When David is around ten years old, Léah asks for a divorce from her husband and leaves Berlin, leaving David with a deep sense of abandonment. At the age of 25, David marries a Jewish woman from East Germany, with whom he has Eitan. Twenty-two years later, Eitan leaves Germany for the United States to pursue his doctoral thesis. He falls in love with a young American woman of Moroccan descent, Wahida, a history student. During Passover, Eitan’s family decides to visit him, and Eitan wants to introduce Wahida to them, but his father reacts violently and rejects the young woman because of her Arab origins.

Wajdi Mouawad, a Lebanese-born author, describes with *Tous les oiseaux* the feelings and pains of the enemy in a tense atmosphere surrounded by attacks. The action takes place mainly in Israel, a land of torment that carries the cruel history between the Middle East and Europe; it is set in a unique context: a wave of suicides among young men and women in love affects the entire country. These Israeli-Palestinian couples are doomed to have their love be impossible…
