PEOPLE WATCHING: PLAY DEAD
Surrealism, dance, intimacy and circus come together to celebrate life as a perpetual dance.
In a world that seemed unreal — spring 2020, global pandemic — six artists who had met at the circus school in Montreal decided, during that period of isolation, to explore through the internet new ways of sharing intimacy with the audience. That was the seed of an original project, a collective they chose to call People Watching.
The Canadian company brings us Play Dead. This intimate and multidisciplinary performance reflects a creative quest that combines influences from contemporary Canadian circus, modern dance and physical theatre. Set in an ever-shifting universe of domestic elements and intertwined stories, *Play Dead* blends acrobatics, juggling, dance and physical expression, casting circus in a fresh and unexpected light. Through their bodies, and without words, the six characters tell small everyday, surreal stories that reveal just how beautiful, twisted and absurd reality can be. Acrobatics of the highest level merge with poetry and humour. The performers jump, fall, fly and dance in this reflection on the fading of youth and the uncertainties of life, while still celebrating life itself as a perpetual dance, driven by a desire to connect with others and share intimacy.
