LAS AMISTADES PELIGROSAS

by Christopher Hampton

Love becomes a weapon in a game of power, manipulation and desire.

15 to 17 january 2027

*Les Liaisons dangereuses* is a play by Christopher Hampton, based on the novel of the same name by Choderlos de Laclos. Although the novel was published in 1782, it speaks about issues of striking relevance today, such as abuse of power, consent, and the way money can, sadly, buy almost anything. The play shows how the most powerful classes are able to toy with the less privileged with complete impunity, and how sex and the need to possess so often shape our lives. The manipulation of feelings and the use of love as a weapon are themes as current today as they were in the 18th century. In this way, the play speaks both of what has happened and of what is still happening.

Valmont and Merteuil, its protagonists, are two fascinating characters “without moral restraint” – as Jean-Paul Sartre defined them. In many respects, they are not so far removed from figures such as Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, to mention just two celebrities caught up in scandal in recent years.
