August 2012, in a parking lot in Leicester, beneath a space marked with an R, the remains of Richard III were discovered. Not the usual place to bury a king. That’s where our story begins: a dissection not only of the turbulent but brief reign of Richard III, but also of the human evil that—consciously or unconsciously—forms part of our psychological and biological nature. Richard, deformed and Machiavellian, tyrannical and bloodthirsty, reminds us that evil is a part of daily life, that it is woven into our DNA, that both darkness and virtue dwell in the human heart. Hell is empty; all our demons are here.

Richard III is one of the greatest villains ever created by Shakespeare, a figure of diabolical magnetism turned into a theatrical myth. The play, written around 1592 when Shakespeare was just twenty-eight, is entirely structured around the evil monarch, the driving force upon which all the action depends. It is undoubtedly one of his most ambitious historical works—and one of the most spectacular and brutal dramas in the history of theatre.
