During the war, several healthy men were admitted to the San Miguel psychiatric sanatorium. Why? Many years later, Garay, the director of the sanatorium — who already held that position at the time — and Benet, his most brilliant disciple, confront one another over that mystery.
In *El jardín quemado*, two fundamental concerns of Mayorga’s theatre come to the fore. On the one hand, memory and the difficulty of judging the past. “The past,” Mayorga has said, “is unpredictable, no less open than the future, and within it beat questions that may endanger the present that dares to look at it.” On the other hand, imagination — and with it, theatre — as a means of escape from a harsh, cruel reality, such as that endured by those defeated in war.
