EL DESPERTAR DE LA PRIMAVERA
The devastating consequences of censoring free thought, silencing adolescence, and criminalising desire.
In this version of *Spring Awakening*, Frank Wedekind’s text is transposed to a near future where the far-right movements currently resurging in Europe and the United States have managed to consolidate power. The technological society in which the action takes place coexists with increasing moral, social and sexual repression. The rights that marked progress in the 20th century—freedom of expression, feminism, sex education, diversity, individual autonomy—have been gradually eroded in the name of order, tradition and security.
In this dystopian setting, the play unveils—now more chillingly than ever—the devastating consequences of censoring free thought, silencing adolescence, and criminalising desire.
More than a century after it was written, *Spring Awakening* remains startlingly relevant. Performing it today is not just timely: it’s essential. Because we are still asking ourselves how to wake up, when everything around us keeps lulling us back into a fearful slumber.
