El alcalde de Zalamea

A man defending his dignity against the abuses of power.

From 29 september to 02 october 2016

“On just another day, the troops stay in a village (or invade it?), two tough men become friends, a young woman is kidnapped and raped, a man is executed and a town rises up against the army.

“The Mayor of Zalamea talks… of justice; of a contradictory and lucid man who tries to be fair in a world that is not; of a woman who falls victim of a man, an army, a country and the laws; of the rape of a person, a village and a civil order and the price to be paid not to turn a blind eye”. These are the words of Álvaro Tato, the author of this version of the immortal play by Calderón de la Barca.

The National Classical Theatre Company, directed by Helena Pimenta offers us an extraordinary staging with Carmelo Gómez in a magnificent performance as Pedro Crespo, Joaquín Notario, playing Don Lope de Figueroa and Nuria Gallardo as Isabel, the rape victim.
