TETRAPHILLA ENSEMBLE

Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam

A sublime and exciting musical journey through the life of St. Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556)

24 november 2021

Ignatius of Loyola is, without doubt, one of the most relevant personalities of the 16th century. This musical journey through the lifetime of the founder of the Society of Jesus brings the story of an exciting life to the theatre. Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam (AMDG) is the motto of the Society of Jesus, one of the founding milestones of Christianity and one of the most influential organisations in the history of the West, from the 16th century to the present day. This phrase, Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam, is the title chosen by the Tetraphilla Ensemble to review, with virtuosity and elegance, the figure of the Saint through the music of his time and others related to the most relevant events in his life.

Tetraphilla Ensemble proposes an innovative formation (mesotonic accordion, recorder and vocal quartet) and some of the most beautiful 16th century music, including composers such as J. Anchieta (1462 – 1523), G. M. de Bizcargui (1460 – 1528), J. Desprez (1440-1521), C. de Morales (1500 – 1553). An excellent opportunity to listen to exquisite music from the period and the places visited by St. Ignatius, with renowned performers, extolled by international critics.

Tetraphilla Ensemble emerged from the interests of its members in exploring the sonic possibilities of combining the mixed vocal quartet with the mesotonic accordion. In this search for new paths, the group focuses on two of the repertoires that most appeal to them, ancient music and contemporary music. The search for their own sound becomes the group’s hallmark, opting finally for an open and multidisciplinary aesthetic position.
