SAGASTITARRAK

by Ramón Madaula

Does it mean anything to keep or change a surname?

02 october 2022

In the home of the Sagasti, an upper middle-class family, their daughter creates a negative atmosphere. Ane, a feminist social activist, has decided to change her first surname to that of her mother’s: “We will not end patriarchy until we adopt the surname of our mothers who brought us into the world.” For Antón Sagasti, head of the family, it is unfathomable she wishes to change the surname Sagasti, which has a long history in the region. In order to maintain the surname’s continuity, Antón will employ every trick in the book to convince Ane, his daughter, to abandon her plan to change her surname.
