At Esteban and Raimunda’s summer estate, Acacia’s engagement to Faustino is celebrated. After becoming a widow, Raimunda married Esteban, hated by her stepdaughter. Tragedy strikes when the groom is murdered on the night of the engagement. The sons of Uncle Eusebio, the murdered man’s father, accuse Raimunda’s nephew, who was Acacia’s first suitor, but others in the village know he is innocent.
A folk song begins to circulate through the streets: “El que quiera a la del Soto… tiene pena de la vida. Por quererla quien la quiere le dicen… la Malquerida”. The net tightens, and hidden, forbidden desires begin to surface. El Rubio, the estate foreman, fuels the rivalries between the families. Raimunda, determined to uncover the truth, will not rest until she finds the light that, like fire, will consume all her dreams.
