Macbeth

A powerful, creative version of one of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies in a new production by Arriaga Theatre

07 to 12 february 2019

Macbeth is, without a doubt, one of Shakespeare’s major tragedies. It has all the elements to be enthralling: ambition and power, war, betrayal, deceit, violence… It shows how a seemingly noble man, spurred by his ambitious wife, does everything and more to climb to the top and turns into a bloodthirsty tyrant along the way. Macbeth is about evil and how it leads to paranoia, madness and downfall.

Alex Gerediaga and his team take on the challenge of staging this vertigo-inducing, disturbing, gory play in a production that is faithful to both the original text and their usual line of work, based on the blend of theatre and film conventions. They set Shakespearian tragedy in an atmosphere of their down, using their characteristic narrative and aesthetic resources – a risky endeavour, laden with responsibility. Moreover, the play will be staged both in Spanish and in Basque, a bilingual gambit that is seldom the case when it comes to staging Shakespeare.

In Basque:  9, 10 February

In Spanish: 14-17 February

Introduction to Macbeth and William Shakespeare

Coinciding with the staging of the Scottish play, on the 7, 9, 10, 11 and 12 February, half an hour before the Basque language performances of the play, there will be talk on Macbeth and the playwright William Shakespeare, given by Xabier Monasterio,  from Zenbat Gara Elkartea. It will be in the foyer of the Arriaga Theatre and will last approximately 20 minutes, a little taster for what you will see later on stage.
