LUCHA Y METAMORFOSIS DE UNA MUJER

by Édouard Louis

An ambitious autobiographical project on a mother’s heroic transformation in a man’s world.

24 to 25 april 2024

Working from the chance-finding of a self-portrait from his mother’s youth, Éduard Louis looks back on the figure of a woman pushed aside from everything, subjugated and even humiliated by masculine violence, against which she rebels aged forty-five by fleeing and gradually reconstructing her freedom. This project portrays the metamorphosis of a women destroyed by the patriarchal society, family and even her son, before celebrating their reunion and restoring his mother’s dignity.

In this high-stakes play, probing deeper than just a photographic portrait, Éduard Louis himself (played by Eneko Sagardoi) “invites” us to share the stage with his mother (Lucía Quintana) at all times. She is a “silent” presence (bar a few brief lines), strengthened by the projection, on both sides, of a close-up of the mother moving “in situ” through the emotional nooks and crannies of this text without any condescension, and courageous to the point of auto-critical honesty. An essential confessional and restorative dialogue between mother and son where the audience are privileged witnesses.
