In this musical tale, a rag doll ballerina wakes up at midnight and invites all the toys living with her in the box to dance. A teddy bear, a wheeled elephant, a dachshund, a crocodile, and many other toys appear. Among them, the doll prefers Punch, the popular glove puppet, because he is the best dancer. The doll and Punch become a couple, but he doesn’t treat her well, prompting a wooden toy soldier to intervene and triggering a playful battle with dice, balls, and paper scraps. It’s all just a game, but the soldier ends up broken and torn. The doll helps and saves him, and love eventually blossoms between them.
Puppets and objects designed from real toys of the 1920s and 1930s, shadow theatre, video projections, a pianist, and an actress come together in a musical masterpiece of 20th-century composition, offering a contemporary version for today’s children that highlights values such as non-violence and the power of love.
