The play begins on the very night Clara’s novel is launched, when someone knocks at her door. It’s been over two years since she last saw her, and life on the street has left its mark—but Clara recognises her. It’s Manuela, the evicted elderly woman who inspired the character “Cándida” in her book. “I’ve come so you can take me in, just like you do in the novel.”
Against her will, Clara is forced to let the old woman stay in her home for a while—on the advice of her publisher. The book has been marketed with shades of autofiction, the print run is ambitious, and both the investment and Clara’s reputation as a writer are at stake. If the public finds out that Clara has done the opposite in real life to what she wrote in the novel, everything could fall apart.
