The young writer Klara Balzes has written her first novel, Kandida, a story about a homeless person. Kandida is a fictional character, but she is based on a real person. Klara met this real woman, Manuela, through an association defending the rights of people facing eviction. In the novel, Klara takes Kandida into her home. In real life, Klara lost all trace of Manuela forever. On the day the novel is published, Manuela turns up at Klara’s house and asks the young writer to do exactly what she did in the book: to take her in.
