El florido pensil chicas – neskak

A fun, liberating and contemporary look at the absurd and illogical brutality of the education system that dominated Spain.

18 to 21 february 2016

The creators of “El florido pensil”, one of the biggest hit plays in Basque theatre, are now raising the roof of the national Catholic school that allowed “Girls” to go to school to train for their sole fate of self-sacrificing mother and submissive wife. The premeditated brutality of girls’ education entrusted to those ferocious and servile “teachers” is presented on stage and viewed trough a contemporary and ironic lens by five of their angelic victims, now (not quite so upstanding) women…

The Arriaga Theatre presents the world premiere, in Basque and Spanish, of “El florido pensil. Niñas”. A fun, liberating and contemporary look at the absurd and illogical brutality of the education system that dominated Spain in its post-war period, during which school, the chisel of society, and its dominant ideology had decided to reinstate the most profound medieval patriarchy and take it to its ultimate extreme. Women were the primary target of the moralising enterprise, “naturally destined for marriage and household chores”. Their professional career was limited to getting married and having children. And almost everyone was in agreement on this: teacher, priest, parents, moralists, popular singers, writers of romantic novels, and even gym teachers… Because there were only two types of women: the decent ones, and the others.
