EL ENTERRADOR

by Gerard Vázquez and Pepe Zapata

For them, it’s vermin we’re burying...but I bury human beings.

16 to 17 january 2024

“First, I wash the bodies. I don’t do it to wipe away their crimes. I wasn’t sent to do that; I wash them because I want to. They don’t care how I bury the bodies; they just want me to get a move on. They are all stacked inside, one on top of the other, a bag of quicklime and then I shovel the earth back on top. For them, it’s vermin being buried in these shallow graves…but I bury human beings.”

An actor is preparing his monologue to recite in front of an audience in a few days’ time. He has written it himself based on what his family has told him about the gravedigger and his grandfather over the years. The character comes from the same village as his family. Today, he is practising alone in the theatre, running through the play hours before the scheduled rehearsal. His character has to bury the people who have been executed each day as they are brought to the cemetery. That day he recognises a friend among the corpses…

The show also pays homage to all the people, in many cases anonymous heroes, who were determined to leave a humane and dignified account of what happened during the horror and the brutality of the Civil War and the post-war period.
