If we think of our existence as a ball of thread, we always pay more attention to the tip of life and less to that of death. Chavela Vargas came into the world to sing truths with her heart and the dagger of her voice. She once said: “I’m not going to die because I am a shaman, and we don’t die, we transcend.”

María Isabel Anita Carmen de Jesús Vargas Lizano returns home after a long tour, the last one. Her friend “La Pelona” will come for her in three days, and Chavela oscillates between the edge of this world and the next. From time to time, she forgets who she is, but a red thread carries her far; to those places where “she loved life,” to a limbo of memories that visit her before the departure. There, an old woman waits for death, a wounded child commands within a woman, and a Myth becomes eternal. The characters appear and fade away in a staging filled with magical realism. Every night, we will channel “The Myth” who will sing to us and carry us to that dreamlike world. Chavela will teach us to look at ourselves in her free and resounding mirror, living, dying, and becoming eternal. That’s why Chavela Vargas is much more than all of that. Chavela is all of us, and all of us are Chavela. Raise your glass and let’s toast to this death that turns into life.
