BEGOÑA GÓMEZ Y JESÚS LÓPEZ BLANCO
“Island does not only mean a land surrounded by water: island means a land of peace, of dreams, a refuge from unrest.” — S. Rusiñol
The title of this concert, *The Island of Calm*, takes its name from the book in which the painter Santiago Rusiñol shares his visions of the island of Mallorca. In this recital, mezzo-soprano Begoña Gómez and pianist Jesús López Blanco invite us into a close, intimate, and unhurried dialogue between composers whose connection with this Mediterranean haven of calm left a deep mark on them. The programme therefore brings together composers linked to Mallorca through birth, identity, aesthetic affinity, or experiences lived during temporary stays on its shores.
The audience will hear a carefully chosen selection of songs for voice and piano by F. Chopin, M. Capllonch, I. Albéniz, E. Granados, B. Samper, J. Mas Porcel, J. M. Thomas, M. de Falla, A. García Abril, and A. Parera Fons. In this way, Begoña Gómez and Jesús López Blanco combine the work of well-known names with pieces by less frequently performed composers in the realm of art song. All of them loved Mallorca, and from it their creations drew nourishment and inspiration.
