Antton Valverde, approaching the age of 80, has released ‘Gaua, ausentziaren itzala’ (Night, shadow of absence), an exquisite album that clearly reflects his greatest skill: a refined taste in setting the main Basque poets to music. Among these poets, two from Biscay who have accompanied him throughout his career, are central: Bitoriano Gandiaga and (above all) Lauaxeta, to whom he dedicated an entire album in 1978 and who has always been part of his repertoire. While the Valverde that we know retains his continuous and serene artistic activity with class, this latest album includes some surprising novelties. For example, the poem ‘Gaua’, by Harkaitz Cano, which gives the album its title, has been translated into Spanish and English, thus creating three different versions of the same poem.
For the live performance, Antton Valverde will delight us with careful arrangements of classical songs, resulting in a delicate approach in which his beautiful voice and his sensitivity on the piano will be accompanied by a trio (violin/viola – cello – accordion). This concert at the Arriaga Theatre is a unique occasion to applaud and acknowledge one of the most important musical references of Basque culture.
