A project at the Arriaga Theatre carried out by countertenor Carlos Mena that will have its climax in a concert featuring 21 musical laments bringing together feeling, virtuosity and numerology. A journey through Lagrime di San Pietro (St Peter’s Tears) by Orlando di Lasso – a masterpiece of European Renaissance music, comprised of 20 madrigals (poems by Luigi Tansillo, 1510-1568) and a concluding motet. Dedicated to Pope Clement VIII on 24 May 1594, the Lagrime were published in Munich in 1595. Curiously enough, Lasso finished this work 21 days before his death, on 14 June 1594.
Divided into seven modes, the Lagrime are set for seven voices that go through seven chants or reciting tones – an explosion of musical feeling to reflect St Peter’s grief after his denial of Christ. Seven, the number associated with abundance, is multiplied by three (the members of the Holy Trinity) to make the 21 tears.
