Swan Lake! You only have to mention the name of this great ballet classic, and many images and associations immediately spring to mind: a lake in the moonlight, the dance of the cygnets, Prince Siegfried who can’t decide between Odette and Odile, the evil sorcerer Rothbart. There have been countless traditional interpretations, modern takes and parodies on both the stage and the big screen. What more is there to say about Swan Lake? Really, not much, unless you find a new format for the story…
Eric Gauthier asked four of the world’s most important choreographers to create their own version of Swan Lake for the Dance Company Theaterhaus Stuttgart. These works are not intended to be joined together as one long piece. They are an attempt to create a plural Swan Lake, with four individual adaptations of the ballet each lasting 20 minutes, as varied in style as their own choreographers. What a wonderful opportunity to discover something new, working from a well-known story!
